Modifications
There are certain circumstances that may prevent a student from reaching the goal other than simply not knowing the material. In such cases:
- They're given letters don't appear enough in their chosen text: Allow students to choose a different book or you may give them a different set of letters that fits their original book
- They’ve grown bored of the text they chose: Allow them to pick a different one
- They’re not familiar enough with the particular letter they’ve received: Some letters are harder to find than others. Assign them a different one, preferably a vowel
- They feel overwhelmed: If you chose to give your students a small set of letters to search for, reduce a struggling student’s list to one. If they show improvement, consider assigning a second one.
- If none of these apply and a student is struggling, allow them to work close to a teacher or in a group that needs extra assistance
Alternate Lesson Procedure
- Group Activity
- Student can be divided into groups. They will be assigned either a set of letters or a single one. They will work together to reach the total amount. This version of the lesson is preferred for students who struggle with letter identification (4 minutes)
